In 2005, UNWTO and the Guilin Municipal Government of China reached an agreement of collaboration on promoting sustainable tourism in Guilin with the establishment of the first global observatory on Sustainable Tourism Development: Yangshuo. Since then, 9 observatories were established in China and more than a decade of monitoring work has been carried out in China.

The Monitoring Centre for UNWTO Sustainable Tourism Observatories (MCSTO) at Sun Yat-sen University has organized seven annual conferences in different observatories in China since 2012. The conferences provide a platform for observatories to share experiences, new methods and practices in measurements for a more sustainable tourism development.

This year, the conference will be held in Huangshan, Anhui Province, welcoming national and international guests to advance discussion regarding the systematic application of monitoring, evaluation (sustainable tourism indicators) and information management techniques, as key tools for the formulation and implementation of sustainable tourism policies, strategies, plans, and management processes. The theme of the annual conference of this year is “Culture and Tourism and Sustainable Development Goals”.

Huangshan city is located in Anhui province, where heritage tourism serves as the key industry for regional development. Three sites are monitored since Huangshan became a UNWTO Sustainable Tourism Observatory in 2008: Mount Huangshan, Xidi Village, and Hongcun Village.
