In 2005, UNWTO and the Guilin Municipal Government of China reached an agreement of collaboration on promoting sustainable tourism in Guilin with the establishment of the first global observatory on Sustainable Tourism Development: Yangshuo. Since then, 8 observatories were established in China and more than a decade of monitoring work has been carried out in China.

The Monitoring Centre for UNWTO Sustainable Tourism Observatories (MCSTO) in Sun Yat- sen University, in collaboration with the People’s Government of Changshu of China and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), has organized five annual conferences in different observatories in China since 2012. The conferences provide a platform for observatories to share experiences, new methods and practices in measurements for a more sustainable tourism development.

In November, the conference will be held in Changshu, welcoming national and international guests to discuss the systematic application of monitoring, evaluation (sustainable tourism indicators) and information management techniques, as key tools for the formulation and implementation of sustainable tourism policies, strategies, plans and management processes.
